1959 Chevy Impala



The 1959 Chevrolet Impala was redesigned. Sharing bodyshells with lower-end Buicks and Oldsmobiles as well as with Pontiac, part of a GM economy move, the Chevrolet's wheelbase was 1 1/2 inches longer. Using a new X-frame chassis, the roof line was three inches lower, bodies were two inches wider, and curb weight increased. Its tailfins protruded outward, rather than upward. The taillights were a large "teardrop" design at each side, and two slim-wide nonfunctional front air intake scoops were added just above the grille..

The Eldorado was at or near the top of the Cadillac line. The original 1953 Eldorado convertible and the Eldorado Brougham models of (1957–1960) had distinct bodyshells and were the most expensive models that Cadillac offered those years. The Eldorado was never less than second in price after the Cadillac Series 75 limousine until 1966. Advertised as The Hot One the boxy new Chevy was crisp, clean and thoroughly modern looking and its popularity was shared with the Tri-Five Chevrolets of this generation. The base V8 had a 2-barrel carburetor and was rated at 162 HP and the Power Pack option featured a 4-barrel carburetor and other upgrades yielding 180 bhp. Later in the year, a Super Power Pack option added high-compression and a further 15 bhp. It had room for 6 passengers.
